Based on the analysis of commercial imagery, ground photography, and open reporting, gold mining and the associated usage and transportation of mercury have increased in riverine sections of Western Venezuela and Eastern Guyana.
This article uses a case study of a known hotspot in Guyana for selling mercury to contextualize broader land cover/land usage mining expansion trends along the border. This article is a down payment for the next Tearline piece that will substantially expand the scope with more automated analysis to find more “illegal” gold mines.
